Arusha town is around 1,300 m above sea level and has approximately 1 Mio inhabitants. Cash crops, coffee and roses are grown around this green town. From Kilimanjaro international airport the drive takes around 45 minutes to reach town.

Arusha town is starting point for most safaris to the Northern circuit. After 1 hour drive through coffee plantation you reach the entrance to Arusha National Park at the foot of Mt. Meru. The park covers an area of 137 kmē, was gazetted in 1962 and reaches from 1500 m above sea level up to 4.500 m on the peak of Mt. Meru. The vegetation changes according to the altitude.

Animals in the park: Maasai giraffes, buffaloes, bushbuck, red duiker, Kilimanjaro-Guereza, blue monkeys, zebras and many more. Around 420 bird species are listed.

Guided tours on Mt. Meru take 2 - 4 days. Programs below. From the Momella gate you can go for a walk up the hill to a waterfall.
A ranger will accompany you. You might meet buffaloes, warthogs, various birds and others.






Different lakes build the Momella lakes. These are soda lakes changing seize according to rainfall. On a one way road you drive around them and you are allowed to leave the vehicle at designated points. Flamingos and many other birds can be spotted.

15 Million years ago Ngurdoto Crater in the Southeast in the park was born. Today it is a steep round crater of 3 km diameter.
On its cool and humid walls grow ferns, mosses and orchids.






Arusha National park is absolutely worth a visit. Not only views onto Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro are fantastic also the variety of plants, like this epiphytic fern.





Accommodation in and around Arusha town



Mount Meru Game Lodge and Sanctuary is 18 km from Arusha town towards Kilimanjaro Airoport. It has its own sanctuary and is a lovely place to start or to end a safari in Northern Tanzania.  It only has 15 double rooms and 2 suites.







Moivaro Lodge is about 20 minutes driving from Arusha town, surrounded by shambas (small plantations) and coffee plantations. From the beautiful garden you can see Mount Meru. The bungalows have enough space in-between and are surrounded by flowers attracting birds.

Under the same management but more exclusive is Arusha Safari Lodge.






Lake Duluti Lodge has only 18 chalets and is directly situated at the shore of the idyllic Lake Duluti.

Encounter the area on foot in the forest with a guide or the lake by canoe.

Mountain Village belongs to Serena Group. The small lake Duluti nearby makes it a lovely place. If you like a guide will take you to the lake shore for a small fee. Like all Serena Lodges it has a high standard.






Le Jacaranda is a comfortable hotel in town with 23 rooms .






Kiotanest Guesthouse is Swiss owned and built within a natural forest close to the main gate to the park. It accommodates 8 people and you will enjoy a very delicious cuisine.






Meru Simba and Meru Mbega Lodges are adjacent to Arusha National park; you even see the forest and Mount Meru from the compound. It takes around 40 minutes driving on partly rough road from Arusha town or Kilimanjaro Airport.

Mt Meru (4,566m) is only 50 km from Kilimanjaro away and with superb trekking and immense natural beauty. The excellent potential for acclimatization on this volcano is often overlooked. Higher up there is thrilling trekking around the crater rim with stunning views across to Kilimanjaro or back to the plains and volcanoes of the Great Rift Valley.

Eastern Ascend DAY 1: After breakfast leave Arusha at 8.00 a.m. and drive to the Momella Gate where you meet your guide and crew. Your climb starts at around 10.00 a.m. and goes through the natural forest finally getting you to the moorland for an overnight at the Maria Kamba hut. On your way you will encounter giraffes, zebras and buffaloes or if you are lucky as well the black and white Colobus monkeys. The walk takes 3-4 hours with a cold lunch on the way.

DAY 2: Today's hike takes you through the moorland to the Saddle Hut at 3566 m. In the afternoon you can ascend for 1 hour to little Mt. Meru (3820 m) from where you enjoy a nice view over the Momella lakes and towards the main summit.

DAY 3: The short night ends at 2.00 a.m. for the final ascend of Mt. Meru peak (4556 m). At about 6.00 a.m. you can enjoy a magnificent view from the summit of the snow capped Mt. Kilimanjaro peaks and the vast plains hosting the Arusha National Park. You then descend to Saddle Hut for late breakfast before proceeding to Maria Kamba Hut for overnight.

DAY 4: Descend to Momella gate. On the way you may find elephants and buffaloes amongst zebras and giraffes. Your walk ends at the former Hardy Krueger Farm, now Momella Lodge, where you will have lunch before you drive to Arusha for dinner and overnight at a hotel in Arusha. 

The Western ascend starts from Oldonyo Sambu, from where a 2 hours drive on a rough road takes you to the 1st overnight place. Overnight in tents.

DAY 2: You hike through forest and moorland. Overnight in tents.

DAY 3: Ascend to Mt. Meru peak as in program above. Maria Kamba hut.

DAY 4: Descend to Momella gate as in program above. Overnight in a hotel in Arusha. 

If you like to enjoy the unique nature of this volcano for longer you can add days to any itinerary.
