Birding is about looking for special species, endemic or rare. On this safari you will have exactly that opportunity. Many areas you will visit are famous for a high number of endemic and rare species.

Tanzania is a country with a very wide variety of biotopes. From semi- arid regions, coast, snow-capped mountain to mountain forests and the Eastern Arc mountains where due to the fact that they have been isolated for millions of years a lot of endemism evolved.

The same tour can also be enjoyed by non birders. Instead of looking out for birds you will pay more attention to other animals or to local people who warmly welcome visitors. All visited regions are also great for butterfly watching.

Dates: 1. - 12. October 2016 and 30. January - 10. February 2017

Usambara West Mountains
Today you will mainly do excursions on foot. You will go deep into the nearby Shagayu rainforest, which is famous for its birds and richness in species. Good shoes and a bit of good condition will help you to enjoy the walks under amazing trees, in fresh air and with the songs of birds in your ears. But it is also home of many flowering plants, like the Violet and therefore breeding place for a large number of butterfly species. A local guide will additionally show us the path and best places to find birds.

The Usambara Mountains stretch from East to West for about 90 km and from North to South 30 - 50 km. Together with the Taita Hills in Kenya and further South in Tanzania the Udzungwa mountains, just to mention the most known once, are part of the Eastern Arc mountains. The age of the stones reaches back to the Precambrian time, about 4.5 billion of years.  The range was formed about 600 Mio years ago by faulting and uplifting of the earth crust. East and West Usambara are still partly covered by a 30 Mio year old rain forest. In the West Usambara the highest peak, Sungwi goes up to 2.290 m while Nilo in the Eastern part 1.506 m. The faulting of the ranges started about 600 Mio years ago. Up to today part of the Usambara range is covered by a 30 Mio year old rain forest. About 900 square kilometers of the Eastern part were in the year 2000 declared as UNESCO biosphere reserve and are listed with the World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA). Usambara East is closer to the ocean and receives more rainfall than the Western part.

The Eastern Arc Mountains throne over the savanna. Due to the long isolation an amazing biodiversity has evolved with many endemic plants, birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects. The well known Usambara violets origin from the Usambara Mountains.

Since the lodge is not far from the park we will spend the morning and afternoon there. The time of the day is more comfortabely spent in the lodge. The park covers an area of 1.100 sqkm. The temperatures are high and it is very often humid.  Many acacias grow here and attract a good number of giraffes but also acacia loving birds as well as shore dwellers and migrants.
Mangroves, acacias and Doum palms create diverse biotopes and so is the bird life. Check on the palms a fish eagle or a palm nut vulture might sit on top.
